Ordering Your Urn Is This Easy

Ordering a Farvel urn is easy:

1. Select a model

Find the model you want in the store.

2. Personalize

Please specify your preferences, such as engraving and lid selection. For personalized urns, we'll send you a draft for approval before production begins.

3. Pay

In the store, you can pay with a credit card, Google Pay, Apple Pay, or Twint. Payment by invoice or in advance is also possible; please contact us directly for more information.

4. Delivery

We typically hand standard urns over to our shipping provider within 24 hours. For personalized urns, processing takes one to two business days. Within Switzerland, delivery takes an additional one to two business days, depending on the delivery area.

When do you need to choose an urn?

In Switzerland, you have more freedom and more time when it comes to the urn than many people realize. Unlike with a burial, there is no requirement to inter the ashes in a cemetery. You are free to decide what to do with the urn and the ashes. This takes some of the pressure off during what is already a difficult time.

Here’s how the process usually unfolds. A cremation typically takes place within a few days—at the earliest about 48 hours and usually within about 96 hours after death. So you don’t have to make a decision in the first few hours. Initially, the ashes are stored in a simple container. You can take your time choosing the right urn and have the ashes placed in it later. The urn becomes particularly important if it’s to be present at the memorial service or burial. In this case, it’s worth ordering it in advance. Since we typically ship standard urns within 24 hours and personalized urns within one to two business days, there’s usually plenty of time for this.

The details surrounding the funeral—such as scattering the ashes in nature—are regulated at the cantonal and municipal levels and may vary. This does not affect your choice of urn. If you have any questions about the funeral, your municipality’s funeral office or your funeral home can assist you.

Order an urn in advance

Some people want to decide while they’re still alive which urn they’ll eventually rest in. This is a very personal decision, and it takes some of the burden off loved ones, who have to handle so many things at once during the grieving process. You can choose and order your Farvel urn in advance at any time. That way, you have one less thing to worry about, and the choice truly reflects your own taste. We do not currently offer a fixed pre-need plan. If you’d like to plan this for yourself or together with a loved one, simply get in touch with us. We’ll be happy to find a suitable solution.

Is the selection at the funeral home sufficient?

Funeral homes typically offer their own selection of urns, often in classic styles. If you have a specific urn in mind—for example, a modern design or a sustainable option—you’re not limited to their selection. You’re free to choose your own urn. Many funeral homes will, of course, accept an urn that you bring in or have delivered directly. Farvel also works with funeral homes. If your funeral home doesn’t yet offer our urns, just ask about us. When placing your order, provide the funeral home’s address, and we’ll deliver directly there.

Our urns are made right here in Switzerland using 3D printing with biodegradable wood fibers. We manufacture the urns ourselves, complete the final steps, and personally package and ship them. The wooden lids, made of oak and walnut, are crafted by the St. Jakob Foundation, which provides employment opportunities for people with disabilities. The ash pouches are produced at the Heimstätten Wil Foundation. Our designs were created in collaboration with Zurich-based industrial designer René Odermatt. Each urn can be personalized, and we offer smaller models specifically for dividing ashes. We also provide personalized consultation. Do I have to decide on an urn right away?

No. In Switzerland, you are free to choose your own urn. The ashes are initially stored in a simple container, and you can take your time to select the right urn.

How do the ashes get into the urn?

After cremation, the ashes are placed in a capsule or an ash bag and placed inside the urn. This is usually handled by the funeral home or the crematorium, but you can also do it yourself if you wish. Upon request, we can also deliver the urn directly to the crematorium.

Can I order an urn for myself in advance?

Yes. Many people choose their urn while they are still alive to spare their loved ones the trouble.

Where can I buy an urn?

You can order your urn directly online from the Farvel Shop, purchase it through your funeral home, or view our urns in person at select retail locations.

How much does an urn cost at Farvel?

Can I return the urn?

If you are not satisfied with your selection, you can contact us within 14 days of receipt to discuss a return. Personalized urns cannot be exchanged. All urns also come with a satisfaction guarantee, and if there are any defects, we will work together to find a solution.
